Attractions and Activities In & About - Eugene, Oregon

Eugene is a friendly, and has many titles - Track Capital-USA, Cultural Center of the Willamette Valley, home of the University of Oregon's Fighting Ducks, and one of America's most livable communities. Eugene's culture includes concerts in the parks, galleries and museums, to world-class performances at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts. The Hult Center is the home for some highly respected arts organizations: The Eugene Symphony, Eugene Opera, Oregon Bach Festival, Oregon Festival of American Music, Eugene Ballet Company, and Oregon Mozart Players. In the evening, there is a variety of club music, from reggae to jazz, at local entertainment spots. Eugene includes jogging and biking paths, many miles of them winding through city parks along the Willamette River. Two special sites are Hayward Field on the U of O campus, and Pre's Trail, named in memory of Steve Prefontaine, talented middle distance runner at the U of O; who went out for the Olympics in 1972. He placed fourth. That was the year the terrorists took hostages and killed some of the Olympic participants. Steve was so distraught at the loss of some of his teammates that he just couldn't focus on the games after that. But he gave it everything he had. What perseverance! There are many displays of roses, which can be seen in Owen Rose Garden in Skinner Butte Park and rhododendrons in Hendricks Park. Shopping is a major attraction in Eugene. During your visit you can choose from either the open-air bazaar- Saturday Market, or the specialty shops in the downtown section and the Market District, as well as the Valley River Center Mall.
