In & About - Jacksonville, Oregon

Jacksonville has a golden past; by that I mean gold fever. There have been many a campfire story about finding gold along the Applegate river and surrounding areas. There has been stories about fighting Indians along the river while panning for gold. There was a book I read about two men who took the Jacksonville trail from the city of Jacksonville and continued on the trial towards Applegate Lake. They had such good luck finding gold and they were so isolated, one of them decided to hike to Yreka, California and get supplies for both of them. When he arrived he had one too many whiskeys and blurted out to the bartender his strike it rich gold mining activities and showed him a gold nugget. When the man left town they quietly followed him to his mine. Well from then on people flocked to Jacksonville and Applegate to strike it rich. Another story is a man was panning towards Applegate Lake area and found an area where the Cascade mountains and the Sisˇkiˇyou mountains meet at right angles. This was somewhere in the vicinity of Applegate Lake. He sent a letter to a lawyer-relative in New York and told him that he hid a bag of gold under the cabin floor at this location. He was very sick and died. His relative the lawyer came out and tried to find the gold to no avail. Rumor had it that every time someone found the gold and tried to leave the cabin, the Indians attacked them and every person died at that spot. Applegate Lake was Copper Town, that's right people mined copper there until it ran out and turned it into Applegate Lake. Rumor has it no one ever found the gold in the floor of that remote cabin. I have been to Applegate Lake and camped in remote places and never found the cabin. Where the Cascades and the Sisˇkiˇyous meet at right angles. Hmm very interesting. By the way while you are up there looking for the gold try eating at Mc Kee Bridge Cafe, Wow you will be in for a treat...
