LOCATION: Salem, the capital city of Oregon, and Marion County seat, is located on the 45th parallel just 45 minutes south of Portland on Interstate Highway 5. It is in the heart of the fertile Willamette Valley, 58 miles from the Cascade summit on the Santiam Pass. SIZE: Salem contains 40.8 square miles within it's corporate limits. Marion County covers an area of 1,175 square miles, and Polk County contains 708 square miles.

POPULATION: Salem, the third largest city in Oregon, has a population within its corporate limits of 120,835. Marion County's population is 262,800, and Polk County's population is 56,300.

CLIMATE: The climate is mild; however, annual seasons of fall, winter, and summer are discernible. On the average, 70% of the total rainfall occurs from November through March. Only 6% occurs during June through August.
